ADHD & Psychological Testing

Sometimes you know something isn’t quite adding up—but you’re not sure why.

Maybe you’ve wondered for years whether you have ADHD. Maybe you’ve been treated for anxiety or depression but still feel like something is missing. Or perhaps your symptoms overlap in ways that make it difficult to know whether you’re dealing with OCD, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, or something else entirely.

That’s where psychological testing can help.

At Elevate Counseling + Wellness, we provide ADHD testing and psychological assessments in Chicago and Westmont for teens ages 15 and older and adults.

Our goal is simple: to help you better understand what you’re experiencing, clarify a diagnosis when appropriate, and give you useful recommendations for what comes next.

What Can Psychological Testing Help Identify?

Psychological testing isn’t just for ADHD. It can be helpful whenever symptoms are complicated, overlapping, or difficult to fully understand through conversation alone.

Our evaluations may include assessment for:

ADHD & Executive Functioning

ADHD can affect much more than attention. It can show up as chronic procrastination, disorganization, difficulty managing time, forgetfulness, impulsivity, inconsistent motivation, trouble finishing tasks, or feeling constantly overwhelmed by everyday responsibilities.

Our ADHD assessments in Chicago and Westmont look beyond a simple symptom checklist to understand your history, current functioning, and whether ADHD—or something else—best explains what you’re experiencing.

OCD & Anxiety Disorders

Intrusive thoughts, excessive worry, repetitive behaviors, reassurance seeking, perfectionism, and anxiety can sometimes overlap with other mental health conditions.

Psychological assessment can help clarify whether symptoms are consistent with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), an anxiety disorder, or another concern and help guide appropriate treatment.

Depression & Mood Disorders

Not all mood symptoms look the same.

Assessment can help us better understand symptoms associated with Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder and other mood-related conditions, particularly when there have been changes in mood, energy, motivation, sleep, impulsivity, or functioning that have been difficult to explain.

Diagnostic Clarification

Sometimes the biggest question is simply:

“What is actually going on?”

Mental health symptoms often overlap. Difficulty concentrating, for example, can occur with ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep problems, or significant stress.

Psychological testing can provide another layer of information when previous diagnoses don’t quite fit, treatment hasn’t been as effective as expected, or several different conditions may be contributing at the same time.

Do I Need Psychological Testing?

You don’t need to arrive knowing what diagnosis you have. In fact, figuring that out may be exactly why you’re coming.

Testing may be helpful if:

  • You suspect ADHD and want a comprehensive evaluation
  • You’ve received different diagnoses over the years and want greater clarity
  • Your symptoms seem to overlap several different conditions
  • Therapy or medication has helped somewhat, but important symptoms remain
  • You want to better understand patterns that have affected school, work, relationships, or everyday life
  • Your therapist, psychiatrist, physician, or another provider has recommended psychological testing
  • You simply feel that there may be more to the story

The purpose of an assessment is not to find a particular diagnosis. It’s to develop the clearest and most accurate understanding of what you’re experiencing.

What Does Psychological Testing Involve?

There is no single test that tells us everything about a person.

Instead, your psychologist selects assessment tools based on the specific questions you’re trying to answer. Your evaluation may include:

Clinical Interview
We start by learning about you—your current concerns, history, symptoms, previous treatment, and what you hope to understand through testing.

Standardized Psychological Assessments
Depending on your needs, you may complete questionnaires, rating scales, structured measures, or other psychological tests designed to evaluate specific symptoms and patterns of functioning.

Review of Relevant History
Previous evaluations, medical or mental health records, school information, or input from someone who knows you well may sometimes be helpful. We’ll discuss this with you when appropriate.

Results & Feedback
After the assessment is completed, your psychologist will review the results with you, explain what they mean in plain language, answer your questions, and discuss recommendations and next steps.

We want you to leave with more than a diagnostic label. We want you to understand yourself better.
